Jackson Solar will invest $525 million in new solar plants in India – Inspenet

The Indian company Jackson Solar projects an investment of up to 50 billion rupees, equivalent to about $525.2 million, to expand its photovoltaic component manufacturing capacity. The plan includes new facilities that will allow the production of 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar cells and another 3 GW of ingots and wafers.
The announcement was made by Ivan Saha, the company’s managing director, during the trade fair Renewable Energy India Expo. The initiative is part of Jackson Solar’s strategy to expand its presence in the photovoltaic industry and contribute to the development of a stronger supply chain within India.
With this investment, the company seeks to meet the growing demand for solar components and reduce dependence on imported materials, especially those needed to manufacture photovoltaic panels.
According to the schedule presented by Saha, Jackson Solar expects its new facilities to be operational solar cell manufacturing begin operating before the end of December 2027.
Regarding ingots and wafers, the company anticipates reaching a production capacity of 3 GW during the third quarter of India’s fiscal year 2028. These materials are fundamental to the photovoltaic industry, as they are used in the early stages of manufacturing the cells that convert sunlight into electricity.
Currently, Jakson Solar has a solar module plant whose manufacturing capacity reaches 1,2 GW, with the new facilities, the company will be able to participate in other phases of the production process and expand its range of components.
The executive also confirmed that the agreements to acquire the manufacturing equipment have already been finalized, representing progress in the preparation of the planned facilities.
Furthermore, he explained that the production will be primarily destined for the open market, in this way, Jackson Solar will be able to supply components to other manufacturers and companies involved in the development of solar projects.
The expansion announced by Jackson Solar comes as the Indian government continues to take steps to strengthen its solar industry and expand domestic manufacturing of components.
The goal is to have a supply chain less dependent on imports and to improve the availability of materials needed to develop new products solar energy projects.
Currently, certain photovoltaic projects must meet requirements that favor the use of solar modules and cells manufactured within the country.
Starting from June 1, 2028, the authorities plan to expand the provisions applicable to domestic manufacturing to include solar ingots and wafers, in accordance with the established regulatory framework.
With this measure, India seeks to encourage new investments in the early stages of photovoltaic production and reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers, especially China, which maintains a prominent position in the global supply of these components.
The initiative also opens up opportunities for companies like Jackson Solar, which are expanding their industrial capacity to meet the needs of the national market.
Jackson Solar project responds to an increasingly important need for the Indian photovoltaic industry, and it is having facilities capable of manufacturing the different components that make up a solar panel.
The process begins with the production of silicon ingots, which are then cut to obtain wafers, these undergo various industrial treatments until they become solar cells, which are integrated into the modules used to generate electricity.
Although India has made progress in module manufacturing, developing its own capacity in the earlier stages is crucial to reducing exposure to potential supply difficulties.
In this sense, the new facilities would allow for a greater supply of locally produced components and offer alternatives to manufacturers who currently depend on international suppliers.
During his speech, Saha emphasized the importance of building an industrial ecosystem that encompasses the entire photovoltaic value chain. In his view, this integration would help prevent supply disruptions and strengthen the sector’s responsiveness.
The investment also aligns with India energy and climate goals, which seek to expand the share of renewable sources in its electricity system and maintain its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
With the commissioning of the new plants, Jakson Solar expects to strengthen its participation in the manufacture of photovoltaic components and contribute to the growth of the Indian solar industry. Meeting the planned deadlines for 2027 and 2028 will be crucial to realizing this expansion and increasing the availability of domestically produced cells, ingots, and wafers.
