Singapore has set a target of 4 GW of solar by 2035, alongside its existing goal of 3 GW by 2030. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and for Energy, Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang outlined measures this week to meet the new target at the Asia Clean Energy Summit.
“We have just raised our ambition to 4 GWp by 2035,” Gan said. Singapore had 2.3 GW of solar installed as of October, she said, and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) has said the country is well on track for its 2030 target. Gan said solar will meet at most 10% of the city-state’s electricity needs in 2050.
Gan said the EMA has launched a tender to aggregate solar demand across government agencies for public premises, including solar carports and building-integrated PV. The EMA is also working with the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore on a portal to help homeowners adopt solar and find installers, with details to follow.
Industrial agency JTC is piloting an “overhang” solar installation on a canopy between two buildings at Woodlands East Industrial Estate with EDP APAC, said Gan. JTC has also launched two innovation challenges, one for facade-mounted PV and another for containerized solar paired with mobile batteries to replace diesel generators at temporary worksites. In addition, the government is exploring a pilot of solar roof tiles on heritage state buildings with the Singapore Land Authority and Swiss research center CSEM.
Singapore had around 350 MWh of energy storage and aims for just over 1 GWh by 2030, Gan said. She added that the EMA has granted a conditional approval to Sembcorp Utilities to import 1.3 GW of electricity from or through Peninsular Malaysia.
Singapore raised its 2030 target to 3 GWp in March, after installing 504 MW of solar in 2025 to reach 2,093 MW at the end of that year. EMA estimates that rooftop systems make up more than 80% of the country’s capacity. Its largest ground-mounted plant is the 118 MW Sembcorp Jurong Island Solar Farm, unveiled in 2025.
