The Tamil Nadu facility will be commissioned in phases.
India’s Vikram Solar Limited will begin production at its 9-gigawatt (GW) N-type tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cell manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu in December.
Located at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, the facility will be commissioned in phases.
At full capacity, it is expected to supply high-efficiency TOPCon cells for most of the company’s module production.
The plant is the second phase of Vikram Solar’s manufacturing integration roadmap at Gangaikondan.
Its 6-GW module plant at the site was inaugurated in August, whilst a proposed 9-GW ingot and wafer facility has received board approval and is targeted for financial year 2029.
Vikram Solar plans to expand the cell plant’s capacity to 12 GW. The nearly 200-acre integrated campus is being developed through VSL Green Power Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.
The company intends to seek enlistment under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers List-II for cells produced at the facility. The campus is expected to support more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, said the facility would allow the company to manufacture its own cells, marking a key step in its integration strategy.
The planned ingot and wafer facility would extend this strategy upstream, enabling the company to manufacture ingots, wafers, cells, and modules at the same site.
