DartSolar LLC, a clean technology firm headquartered in Los Angeles, California, has finalized production plans for its vehicle-integrated solar array, designed to mount onto standard vehicle roof racks and truck beds without structural modifications.
The company reports that its system utilizes modular 500 W units measuring approximately 23 inches by 6 feet when contracted, which expand to a deployed length of 15 feet when stationary. The setup allows multi-unit configurations: two modules yield up to 1,000 W on standard sedan crossbars, while three to four or more modules can be joined side-by-side on light trucks, vans, trailers, and campers to generate between 1,500 W and over 2,000 W of capacity.
According to technical specifications released by the company, the expanding array is intended to supply off-grid electricity for portable power stations, jobsite tools, and auxiliary battery systems rather than serving as a primary electric vehicle (EV) charging solution. DartSolar estimates daily solar generation will add approximately 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 km) of driving range to an EV under typical exposure conditions.
To improve durability during transit, the array is housed under a 4 mm polycarbonate protective shell designed to mitigate impact damage from hail and road debris. High-speed stability testing was conducted at speeds up to 100 mph (160 km/h) in standard and lateral configurations, though operational guidelines recommend travel speeds under 70 mph.
The system incorporates a multi-angle quick-release locking mechanism to facilitate deployment from different access points around larger vehicles. In line with an open-hardware model, DartSolar has released 3D CAD files (STEP format) for structural plastic components under a share-alike license, enabling end users to manufacture replacement parts locally via 3D printing.
