DTE Energy said its Fish Creek Solar Park, a 132-megawatt facility close to Sheridan, Michigan, has begun operating. The Detroit-based utility described the project as a fresh source of clean power produced in Michigan, supporting its effort to provide dependable electricity while holding customer bills down as much as possible.
Funding for the $268 million project came entirely from customers who choose to take part in DTE’s MIGreenPower program, which let the company add generating capacity without increasing costs for other ratepayers. The park can supply enough electricity for roughly 30,000 homes and is expected to bring substantial economic gains to Montcalm County as well as Bushnell and Evergreen townships.
Matt Paul, president and chief operating officer of DTE Electric, said customers look to the company to keep service reliable and bills affordable, and that adding generation such as Fish Creek is one way it honors that expectation. He noted that the project backs local employment, produces new tax revenue and creates enduring advantages for the communities that took part.
Per the announcement, Fish Creek will produce tens of millions of dollars in extra tax revenue that supports schools, first responders, roads, veteran and senior citizen services and other priorities. Construction of the solar park generated hundreds of local jobs, and participating landowners will receive a dependable stream of supplemental income.
Through Michigan’s Renewables Ready Communities Award, a grant open to local governments that host large-scale renewable energy projects, Bushnell and Evergreen townships each obtained $330,000. Both townships intend to put the money toward renovating their town halls and fire stations as well as other community upgrades.
Fish Creek is one element of DTE’s wider strategy to satisfy Michigan’s rising energy demand through a varied resource mix. At present DTE runs 20 wind parks and 37 solar parks throughout Michigan, which collectively produce enough clean electricity for almost 1 million homes. The company stated that it remains committed to expanding this portfolio as it pursues net zero carbon emissions, and its 2026 Integrated Resource Plan calls for another 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2042.
DTE Energy is a diversified energy business that develops and manages energy-related operations and services across the country. Among its units are an electric company supplying 2.3 million customers in Southeast Michigan and a natural gas company supplying 1.4 million customers throughout Michigan. The company’s portfolio further includes businesses centered on custom energy solutions, renewable generation, and energy marketing and trading.
