FISCAL COURT—At its regularly scheduled meeting last month, the Madison County Board of Adjustments postponed action on a requested conditional use permit for a solar farm. A new date for consideration has not been set.
The Nashville-based Silicon Ranch Corp., one of the nation’s largest independent energy producers, plans to invest $80 million to build a 53-megawatt alternating current solar farm on about 830 acres off Crooksville Road. The development would also include livestock to maintain the property’s vegetation.
The board originally said they would vote on the requested CUP in October. Instead, the meeting lasted 15 minutes and Solar Farms was not mentioned.
“The Board of Adjustments addressed all of the items that were properly before them on last night’s agenda. The meeting was brief because there were no additional matters requiring action once those agenda items had been addressed,” Deputy Judge Executive Jill Williams told The Edge in an email.
When asked about the solar farm proposal, Williams said the Board is still conducting due diligence.
“The Board is evaluating the proposals, along with any information, public comment, requirements, or potential conditions that may be necessary to make an informed decision to either approve or deny the applications,” Williams wrote in the email.
Williams said she “did not want to speculate” on a specific date for the community to expect the Board to vote, but added that the vote will appear on the agenda when the time comes.
In other business, the Board unanimously approved a variance for a 10-foot land variance requested by Whitney Croley for her mobile home on Blue Lick Road in Berea. The variance was for a porch with a roof and a ramp.
Board member Kim Olds, a domestic law attorney in Richmond, abstained from the vote. She would not tell The Edge why.
The next scheduled Board of Adjustments meeting, originally scheduled for Nov. 19 at 5:30 pm, has been marked as canceled on the Madison County meetings calendar.
