After one Glasgow homeowner with solar panels added equipment to improve their output, they saw little change.
They took to Reddit’s r/SolarUK community to ask what could be wrong.
In the thread, the original poster explained that one year’s generation totaled 0.8 megawatt-hours for the 4.5-kilowatt installation.
“I had to withhold payment for them to install optimisers on all panels, although that didn’t seem to make a huge difference,” the OP wrote. “Payback period at this rate is in multiple decades.” They also noted that one string connected the panels, which faced east, south, and west.
Users flagged the wiring arrangement as a potential concern. “Having them on one string is not helping, as either east- or west-facing will be in shade, pulling down the rest of the panels,” the top commenter said.
Another person wrote: “I’ve got 0.93kW on two panels, and it’s generated 567kWh in six months. I’d definitely complain.” A third added in two comments: “They should be doing at least 650kwh/kwp. That’s a super low ballpark. … Something is very wrong. Probably that they’re all on one string isn’t helping.”
One user noted: “That doesn’t look right. I’m in Cambuslang. Only had solar installed this summer and have completely outperformed your annual.”
Despite this negative experience, going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy. Homeowners can use EasyHome‘s free explorer tool to see potential savings from vetted installers in their area.
With energy prices through the roof, there’s never been a better time to go solar — and EasyHome can help you find the best prices from the best installers in your area.
EasyHome takes the guesswork and headaches out of energy upgrades by showing you estimated savings from a network of vetted local partners. To get started, just enter your ZIP and share a few details about your home — seeing your estimate is really that easy.
EasyHome can also help homeowners explore backup battery storage options alongside solar installation choices. Pairing solar with a battery allows homeowners to maximize savings and power their homes with solar when the grid goes down.
Other homeowners have also reported problems after installing solar panels.
• Another U.K. homeowner reported solar output below forecasts after learning two roofs might share one string.
• One homebuyer said their solar array underperformed badly, and installers wouldn’t touch it.
• A U.K. homeowner discovered panels sharing one string across east- and south-facing roof sections.
