Mqabba quarry turned into solar farm capable of powering 900 homes – Times of Malta

Melita project will export all electricity generated to the national grid
A quarry in Mqabba has been transformed into a solar farm capable of generating enough electricity to meet the consumption of around 900 households.
The farm was developed by Melita with an investment of €2.56 million which was fully financed through private investment. The project benefited from REWS’s Invitation to Bid scheme which enables renewable energy projects to benefit from a favourable rate for the electricity they export to the national grid.
The solar farm complements two other smaller ones also operated by Melita. The new Mqabba solar farm exports all the electricity it generates directly to the national grid.
Visiting the site on Thursday, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli encouraged more companies to follow Melita’s example and invest in similar projects to further strengthen Malta’s renewable energy sector.
“Projects such as this demonstrate how investment in clean energy can deliver tangible results. This is the way forward, and I encourage more companies to follow suit,” Dalli said.
Melita is currently generating renewable energy equivalent to more than 40% of the electricity it consumes annually. The company is also working on other projects, with the ultimate aim of generating enough renewable energy to cover 100% of its electricity consumption.
