With the goal of reducing the reliance of water supply networks on the National Electric System, 55 pumping stations in the province will be equipped with photovoltaic solar panels, joining the 88 stations already operating with this energy backup

SANTIAGO DE CUBA — In an effort to decrease the dependence of water supply networks on the National Electric System (SEN), photovoltaic solar panels will be installed at 55 pumping stations in this province—which features the most rugged terrain in the country—adding to the 88 stations already utilizing this energy backup.
This was stated to Granma by Wilmer Destrades Heredia, the delegate for Hydraulic Resources in the territory. He confirmed that a breakdown in the 900-millimeter pipeline in the “Zona Alta”—which last Thursday forced the suspension of service to approximately 16 hydrometric sectors of the “Hero City”—has been resolved. Meanwhile, progress is being made on a new power line to supply electricity to the pumping system that runs from the Gota Blanca reservoir to Quintero, which serves more than 70% of the population of the country’s second-largest city.
Work is also underway at the Maffo station—located in the municipality of Contramaestre—to stabilize service through the installation of a motor and the provision of a reliable electricity supply. This follows investments by the Electric Utility Company to decouple the station from power circuits that frequently experience outages due to generation deficits within the National Electric System.
Furthermore, it was noted that significant progress has been made in the municipalities of Contramaestre, Mella, San Luis, Songo-La Maya, Palma Soriano, Segundo Frente, and Tercer Frente, “particularly at pumping stations serving rural and mountainous communities.” In this regard, the modern equipment “has benefited nearly 50,000 people who, in the past, were affected by the breakdown of conventional pumps—situations for which there had been no short- or medium-term solution.”
However, “we acknowledge that this does not entirely resolve the complex situation regarding water distribution, with cycles exceeding 90 days in quite a few hydrometric sectors across San Luis, Palma Soriano, and Songo-La Maya,” stated Destrades Heredia.
