India is set to achieve a massive 530 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with solar power driving over 80% of this ambitious growth. This places India as the world's second-largest market for renewable energy expansion, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The IEA's 'India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026' highlights that the nation's renewable capacity has already surpassed 300 GW by late 2026, a nearly four-fold increase in just a decade. By 2030, solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity is projected to exceed 350 GW, while wind power aims for nearly 90 GW, and hydropower for 75 GW, boosted by new projects and pumped storage investments.
This rapid expansion means India is well on track to meet its goal of 500 GW non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. In fact, the country hit its 50% non-fossil electricity capacity target five years ahead of schedule, in 2025.
Annual renewable capacity additions are expected to stay above 50 GW through 2030, potentially reaching 70 GW under an accelerated scenario. This will nearly double renewable electricity generation from 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to about 950 TWh by 2030, increasing renewables' share in total electricity generation from 25% to 35%.
Solar PV will be key, projected to account for over half of renewable electricity generation by 2030. While competitive auctions, supportive policies, and falling technology costs are driving this boom, challenges like transmission expansion, land acquisition, and financial health of distribution companies need urgent attention to sustain this green momentum.
