Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming state visit to Ethiopia is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in solar energy, agriculture and mining, as India seeks to deepen its strategic engagement with Africa.
Renewable energy, particularly solar power, is likely to be a central pillar of the discussions, with both countries exploring ways to expand energy access through grid-connected and off-grid solar solutions. Areas of potential collaboration include rooftop solar projects, regional solar connectivity, solar pumps for agricultural use and decentralised energy systems, aligned with India’s efforts under the International Solar Alliance.
Beyond renewable energy, the visit is expected to advance bilateral cooperation in agriculture and mining—sectors viewed as critical to Ethiopia’s economic development and to strengthening trade and investment ties between the two nations. India already maintains a strong investment presence in Ethiopia across agriculture, manufacturing and engineering.
Talks are also expected to cover a wider range of cooperation areas, including digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, education, health and defence. The agenda reflects India’s emphasis on long-term development partnerships and South–South cooperation with African countries.
The visit is being seen as part of India’s broader outreach to the Global South, with Ethiopia emerging as a key partner in sustainable development and economic collaboration in Africa. Indian officials have indicated that New Delhi aims to leverage its expertise in renewable energy, digital systems and capacity building to support Ethiopia’s development priorities.
Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary is also expected to include interactions with the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia, highlighting the people-to-people dimension of bilateral ties.
The Ethiopia visit forms part of India’s wider diplomatic and economic engagement with Africa, as the country continues to strengthen partnerships in clean energy, critical minerals and inclusive growth.
