Alstom boosts sustainability with photovoltaic panels at its Sahagún site, in Mexico
Philippe Molitor
Silvia Aranda
12 May 2025 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has taken an important step in the implementation of its sustainability strategy with the installation of a photovoltaic panel system at its manufacturing site in Ciudad Sahagún, Mexico, which is Alstom’s third largest plant in the world. Through this initiative, Alstom is demonstrating its commitment to decarbonising its activities and contributing to the 2050 objective of zero emissions in the value chain.
“The new Sahagún photovoltaic panel centre represents an important milestone for our Mexican operations, as well as for Alstom’s commitment to building a more sustainable and competitive future for our industry. Our priority is to achieve truly green mobility.”
The recent installation of photovoltaic panels at the Sahagún site offers a production capacity of 583 kWh, which will generate around 1,220 MWh of energy per year, or 16.8% of the site’s total energy consumption. The 1,080 photovoltaic panels recently installed will cover an area of over 15,000 m2. They will provide an efficient and sustainable alternative to the rising cost of electricity and the volatility of the energy market. This is the first installation of its kind on Alstom sites in the Americas.
This project is part of Alstom’s wider programme to convert as many of its facilities as possible to green energy. To date, the company has installed photovoltaic panels at 12 of its sites around the world, with more in the pipeline. This initiative is part of Alstom’s objective to reduce its direct and indirect CO2 emissions at its sites by 40% compared with the fiscal year 2021/2022.
The project has been developed under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), under which the Spanish company Iberdrola will operate the system for 20 years, while Alstom will consume the energy produced. It is estimated that the clean energy produced will reduce CO2 emissions by 0.43 tonnes per MWh
“The new Sahagún photovoltaic panel centre represents an important milestone for our Mexican operations, as well as for Alstom’s commitment to building a more sustainable and competitive future for our industry. Our priority is to achieve truly green mobility,” said Maite Ramos, Managing Director of Alstom Mexico.
With almost 500,000 m2 at Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, Alstom has the largest plant in the Americas, and the third largest in the world. The plant has manufactured more than 4,000 metro and light rail cars, as well as 2,000 diesel and electric locomotives for the country’s three largest cities (Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey). The Sahagún site also manufactures the Tren Maya for the Mexican federal government.
As well as building more than 70% of Mexico’s rail vehicles, the Sahagún site has produced sub-assemblies and large assemblies for trains in operation in cities such as New York, Long Island, Edmonton, Toronto, Beijing, Minneapolis, Kuala Lumpur, Riyadh and San Francisco, among others.
