Morocco and Switzerland are gearing up to deploy the “Solar Rooftop 500” program, a joint cooperation initiative aiming to install 500 MW of new, grid connected rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems across the Kingdom’s commercial and industrial sectors by 2030.
This is the first mitigation project in North Africa and Middle East Region under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement which allows countries to cooperate through the transfer of CO2-equivalent emission reductions.
As Switzerland will fund this five-year program to cost $500 million, the resulting reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be counted toward this European country’s nationally determined contributions (NDC).
For Morocco, the Solar Rooftop 500 program will enable it expand rooftop photovoltaic projects across the commercial, industrial, and tertiary sectors. The goal is to build a solar market segment and enhance the Kingdom’s position as a global leader in the fight against global warming.
According to experts, SR500 program is set to become an “inspirational model” for other countries seeking the deployment of solar panels while tapping international climate finance turning rooftops into a measurable, tradeable lever for decarbonization.
