SOLAR panels are being planned for NHS hospitals and clinics across Dorset as health bodies look to cut energy costs and reduce carbon emissions.
Among the proposals is a scheme to install solar photovoltaic (PV) equipment on the roofs of Westhaven Hospital, Weymouth and the neighbouring Linden Unit. The application, submitted under reference P/PASO/2026/00241, would see panels fitted across both buildings at the Radipole Lane site.
Similar plans have been lodged for Forston Clinic, north of Dorchester near the Charlton Down housing development. The proposal (P/PASO/2026/00233) seeks permission to install roof‑mounted solar PV panels on the NHS facility off Herrison Road.
In Sherborne, Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking approval to install solar panels on the roof of the Yeatman Hospital Minor Injuries Unit (P/PASO/2026/00234).
In Purbeck, a larger rooftop installation is proposed at Wareham Hospital, where Dorset NHS has applied for permission to fit a 34.65 kilowatt‑peak solar PV array to the southern and western roof elevations of the building. The application (P/PASO/2026/00231) would allow the hospital to generate a significant proportion of its own electricity on site.
All of the NHS applications relate to existing buildings, with no changes proposed to building footprints or surrounding land. Planning officers will consider issues such as visual impact, heritage constraints and technical design before decisions are made.
If approved, the schemes would form part of a growing shift across the NHS towards renewable energy and lower‑carbon infrastructure, with hospitals among the most energy‑intensive buildings in the public sector.
The applications are open for public comment on Dorset Council’s planning portal, with decisions expected later this year.
