Wichita County commissioners voted Tuesday to grant a tax abatement agreement to TotalEnergies Renewables USA.
The vote on the 10-year, 100% abatement came after a public hearing which drew no response from members of the public.
Representatives from the Houston-based company have spoken to commissioners at previous meetings about the company’s plans to install more than 1.56 million solar panels over 5,500 acres of leased land in the vicinity of Burnett Ranch Road and State Highway 240.
The company said it will make an anticipated investment of $830 million or more and create two full-time jobs.
County Judge Jim Johnson said initial plans for battery storage at the site have been removed from the agreement.
Rather than paying property taxes, the company agrees to pay at least $1.25 million a year in a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement.
Project Manager Olivia Topete told commissioners construction is likely to begin first week in May with the plant beginning operations in May 2028.
She said the company has an agreement with Google to use the amount of power generated.
Under the deal, the project must be completed before Jan. 1, 2030.
