Egypt targets 1 GW rooftop solar rollout for industrial sector under new Industry Solar Initiative – Green Building Africa

Egypt is targeting the installation of 1 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity across industrial facilities within the next two years under its Industry Solar Initiative, as the country accelerates efforts to decarbonise its manufacturing base and strengthen energy resilience.
The programme was highlighted during recent discussions between the government of Egypt, represented by Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, and the United Nations Development Programme, represented by Resident Representative Chitose Noguchi, focusing on deepening cooperation around green transition priorities and renewable energy deployment.
The initiative is designed to scale up distributed solar generation across factories and industrial zones, supporting Egypt’s broader industrial modernisation and energy diversification agenda.
Support for the programme is being channelled through United Nations Development Programme in partnership with Egypt’s Industrial Modernization Center, with funding from the Global Environment Facility. The collaboration has already enabled the expansion of small scale grid connected solar installations across industrial, commercial, tourism, residential and public buildings.
To date, more than 240 rooftop solar systems have been deployed under the programme, including installations at over 20 factories operating in key industrial sectors. These projects are helping to demonstrate the technical and financial viability of embedded solar generation in Egypt’s industrial landscape.
Egypt and the United Nations Development Programme are also evaluating new financing mechanisms aimed at unlocking greater private sector participation in small and medium scale solar projects. The focus is on improving bankability and accelerating investment flows to support faster rollout of distributed renewable energy infrastructure across the industrial base.
