France-based IPVF (Institut Photovoltaïque d’Île-de-France), a photovoltaic research institute, and TU Delft have announced the achievement of 31% conversion efficiency for a 4 cm² two-terminal (2T) perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell using a scalable manufacturing process. The device combined TU Delft’s (Delft University of Technology) nanotextured silicon heterojunction bottom cell with IPVF’s perovskite top cell fabricated through ambient air slot-die coating. The process is compatible with industrial-scale manufacturing. Performance gains came from nanotextured silicon, optimized ink and coating conditions and an antireflective coating. The organizations said the method is closer to commercial production than laboratory-scale deposition. They are now working to scale the technology to larger-area tandem devices and industrial photovoltaic modules.
