Iberdrola Completes Construction of Fénix, Its Largest Photovoltaic Plant in Italy – Inspenet

The multinational energy company Iberdrola has completed the connection of this clean generation complex located in Sicilian territory. Specifically, the project is distributed among the municipalities of Centuripe, Paternò, and Belpasso, covering the provinces of Enna and Catania. Through this deployment, the company consolidates its presence in the Italian energy market and contributes stability to the local electrical supply.
With the purpose of optimizing solar radiation capture, the installation integrates a total of 413,000 bifacial technology photovoltaic panels. Additionally, integration with the electrical transmission network required the construction of 26 kilometers of medium-voltage lines and 9 kilometers of high-voltage transmission. During the phase of maximum construction activity, the works required the participation of a workforce exceeding 500 technical professionals.
Regarding the destination of production, the plant has an installed capacity of 243 megawatts that will generate approximately 400,000 megawatt-hours annually. This volume of energy is equivalent to the estimated consumption of 140,000 households in the region. Likewise, the majority of the electricity generated is committed under the modality of long-term power purchase agreements, known as PPAs, signed with industrial corporations in the transalpine country.
Due to this commercial mechanism, the associated companies will obtain greater predictability in their operating costs and mitigate the volatility of wholesale market prices. Consequently, the availability of this local renewable source strengthens Italy’s energy sovereignty and energizes the competitiveness of the regional manufacturing sector.
This official opening ceremony featured prominent diplomatic and corporate representation. Among the attendees were the Executive Chairman of Iberdrola Energía Internacional, Hugh Elliott, and the General Director in Italy, Valerio Faccenda. Similarly, the Spanish Ambassador to Italy, Miguel Ángel Fernández-Palacios Martínez, attended along with various authorities from the municipalities involved in the project’s development.
