Eskom has installed a renewable energy microgrid at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital in South Africa’s North West province through its corporate social responsibility arm, the Eskom Development Foundation. The system is designed to improve power reliability for critical hospital departments including the intensive care unit, operating theatres and the emergency department.
The project includes a 200 kW solar photovoltaic system combined with a 400 kWh battery energy storage solution, providing backup electricity supply to meet the operational needs of a provincial hospital. The system is integrated through a central microgrid controller and features a ground mounted solar installation.
Eskom said the installation will help address persistent power disruptions in the area, which is prone to cable theft. By ensuring a stable electricity supply, the microgrid is expected to support uninterrupted healthcare delivery while reducing reliance on diesel generators and lowering operating costs.
Portia Mngomezulu, Eskom Group Executive for Corporate Services, said the project demonstrates the utility’s commitment to a sustainable and inclusive energy future while improving resilience in essential public services.
Mologadi Motshele, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Eskom Development Foundation, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s focus on delivering lasting social impact by supporting critical infrastructure such as healthcare facilities.
Mafikeng Provincial Hospital serves around one million people in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District. Reliable electricity supply remains essential for patient care and the effective functioning of medical services across the region.
Eskom said projects such as this microgrid highlight the role of renewable energy and battery storage in strengthening public services and supporting South Africa’s energy transition, while maintaining dependable electricity supply to communities.
