BRYAN COUNTY, Okla. (KXII) – Leeward Renewable Energy has launched multiple solar farms across Oklahoma, including one in Bryan County just off State Highway 78.
The company says the projects total approximately 725 megawatts coming online this year, with about 320 megawatts near the Durant area.
Much of the energy generated is contracted to Google to support its Oklahoma data center operations, according to the company.
“This helps us get to market more quickly because we don’t have the transmission buyout,” CEO Jason Allen said. “It keeps energy prices low for local users because we’re supplying the local new generation that’s needed.”
The farms are expected to operate for 35 to 40 years. Over that period, Allen said they are projected to contribute about $150 million to the local tax base.
Developers describe the roughly $1.5 billion portfolio as one of Oklahoma’s largest solar investments.
The solar farms are located on privately owned land maintained through pollinator habitats and solar grazing.
“We’ve got biologists on staff that make sure we lay out what gets planted at the sites, that it’s native to the local areas, helps local soil,” Allen said. “The grazing also helps over time. We use sheep grazing.”
Allen said that when the sites reach end of life, all infrastructure will be removed and the land returned to its original state.
