ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – A proposed solar farm outside of Hineston could cover more than 10,000 acres of currently undeveloped land in Rapides Parish, pending permit approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
A permit currently in the review process would allow development of a 4,554-acre solar array in the first stage of the project, positioned alongside the Vernon-Rapides Parishes border. A second stage would add another 5,688 acres to the development, almost entirely within Vernon Parish.
Texas firm Treaty Oak Clean Energy, the business frontrunner behind the project, primarily builds solar farms and currently maintains a 2,300-acre project in Sabine Parish.
According to Treaty Oak’s website, the company has a “special focus on rural U.S. markets” and avoids “develop-and-flip” operations.
According to the permit and data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the proposed site would not create any substantial impact on local wetlands nor on endangered wildlife.
The applicant has proposed to offset project related impacts to jurisdictional wetlands through the purchase of mitigation bank credits.”
The permit remains pending. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is accepting public comment on the permit through Aug. 2.
