A Volkswagen solar farm added nearly 100 sheep to its maintenance crew – Earth.com

At a solar farm beside Volkswagen Poznań’s factory in Września, western Poland, the maintenance crew now includes a flock.
Nearly 100 Greater Poland sheep graze beneath more than 31,000 panels, controlling plants that would otherwise require mechanical mowing.
The unusual setup is also becoming a full-scale research site. The sheep are not making the panels produce more power.
Instead, they are changing how a 67-acre industrial energy site is operated, while scientists test whether electricity generation and livestock farming can share the same ground.
That practical double use is the real story behind the photos.
Grass at a solar facility cannot simply be ignored. Tall or woody growth can block access and complicate inspections, while conventional mowers must work around metal supports and electrical equipment.
Sheep can move through those narrow rows and eat vegetation close to the ground.
The flock arrived in late April 2026 and is expected to remain through the fall under the constant care of experienced breeders.
The animals belong to the Greater Poland breed, which was developed in the region and is now included in a genetic conservation program.
Marzena Pillich-Grońska, director of the Września plant, said the grazing project shows that modern industry can “work in harmony with nature.”
The phrase sets a high bar, but one operating change is already clear. Mechanical mowing is no longer the default way to maintain the array.
Built and operated by Quanta Energy, the solar farm covers about 67 acres and has 18.3 megawatts of generating capacity, a measure of how much power it can deliver at once.
The company and university describe it as one of Europe’s largest on-site solar installations serving an industrial plant.
On bright days, the panels can supply the factory’s entire electricity demand.
Across a full year, however, the installation provides about 25 percent of the plant’s electricity needs.
Like a household electric bill, the annual total tells more than one perfect sunny afternoon.
That distinction matters. The sheep do not increase the amount of electricity the system is designed to produce, and the official announcement reports no measured rise in panel efficiency.
Their job is to manage the land and support research, not to generate electricity themselves.
Agrivoltaics means using the same property for solar power and agriculture.
The agricultural side can involve crops, grazing animals, or habitat planted for bees and other pollinators. In practical terms, one field is asked to do two jobs instead of being reserved for only one.
Sheep are a natural fit for many solar sites because they can maneuver between panel supports and use the structures for shelter.
A 2023 field study of 80 sheep at a California solar farm found that animals in the solar grazing areas spent more time feeding than those on nearby rangeland.
Researchers suggested the panels may have offered relief from heat, wind, and rain, although the work was preliminary.
Still, a flock cannot simply be dropped behind a fence and forgotten. Water, fencing, protection from predators, safe cable management, and access for routine maintenance all require planning.
The grazing schedule matters too, since the California study found that rotation timing changed how long the animals spent feeding.
Researchers from Poznań University of Life Sciences are examining animal welfare, behavior, pasture quality, soil properties, and the microclimate, meaning temperature and moisture conditions close to the panels.
Dr. Joanna Składanowska-Baryza said agrivoltaics lets researchers view solar farms “much more broadly than energy production alone.”
The goal is to find practical rules for combining renewable energy with agricultural land use.
The first observations are encouraging, but they are not final results. Flock owner Justyna Nowak-Gajek said the animals have divided into smaller groups and grazed calmly across different areas.
She noted that sheep feeling threatened tend to remain tightly grouped.
Shade is one of the main questions. A separate 2023 peer-reviewed study conducted in tropical conditions found that solar-panel shade reduced indicators of heat load in sheep.
Poland has a different climate, breed, and panel layout, so local measurements are still needed rather than borrowed conclusions.
Company materials say the site supports biodiversity, local farming, and scientific knowledge. Yet the July announcement did not publish before-and-after counts of insects, plant species, or soil changes.
Claims that the flock has already created a richer ecosystem should therefore be treated as a possibility under study, not a completed scientific finding.
There is good reason to investigate. A 2024 study at three Minnesota solar sites found that the share of ground covered by native plants beneath the arrays rose from about 10 percent after one year to 58 percent after three years.
Researchers observed 68 of the 101 seeded plant species, showing that useful habitat can develop under panels.
That Minnesota work focused on pollinator-friendly vegetation, not grazing sheep. It offers context, not proof for the Polish project.
The outcome in Września will depend on the plants already present, the number of animals, the grazing schedule, weather, soil, and long-term management.
The project stands out because its main tool is not a robot, a new mower, or artificial intelligence. It is a familiar farm animal placed inside modern energy infrastructure.
That can reduce routine mower traffic and the use of mechanical cutting equipment, although the company has not published exact cost or emissions savings.
For solar operators, the wider promise is better use of land. For farmers, it may mean access to pasture and new grazing contracts.
But the arrangement only works if the animals remain healthy, technicians can safely reach equipment, vegetation stays controlled, and ecological improvements can be measured.
What happens next? The flock is due to remain through the fall while researchers continue collecting data.
The most important result will not be that the sheep look comfortable in photographs, but whether the evidence shows safe animals, effective maintenance, and healthier land while the factory keeps drawing solar power.
