The government of the Philippines is preparing a new procurement exercise under its flagship green energy auction (GEA) program that will specifically target agrisolar and projects integrated with aquaculture, referred to by the government as aquasolar.
The country’s Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Agriculture have reviewed a draft memorandum of understanding for the auction, which is scheduled to be the 9th (GEA-9) under the program.
A statement published by DOE says agrisolar and aquasolar installations can optimize abandoned, underdeveloped and underutilized land and water resources while supporting food security and rural livelihoods.
“By integrating renewable energy with agriculture and aquaculture, GEA-9 aims to enable innovative projects that deliver clean power alongside sustainable farming and fishing,” the department’s statement adds.
“The official publication of the GEA-9 Terms of Reference is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, marking another step toward a resilient, multi-sectoral clean energy transition.”
The Philippines’ GEA is a competitive bidding program aimed at private investors. In February, DOE announced plans to hold its next four green energy auctions, GEA-6 to GEA-9, over the next two years as part of wider plans to auction 25 GW of renewables by 2035.
GEA-7, announced in April, will cover rooftop solar, ground-mounted solar and floating solar technologies, with the floating solar allocation expected to incorporate unsubscribed capacities from the fourth green energy auction, which wrapped up last November.
Earlier this week, DOE announced a future round of the GEA will be dedicated to off-grid areas served by the state-run National Power Corporation. It will look to procure renewable energy facilities with battery energy storage systems to replace existing diesel-fired power plants.
The department said the off-grid auction will specifically target 20 islands, with the longlist still to be finalized. The auction is currently scheduled to run next year.
The Philippines installed 899 MW of solar in 2025, according to figures published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), taking cumulative solar capacity to 3,892 MW.
