Running an air conditioner from solar in a camper van can sound far-fetched, especially during the hottest part of summer. But one off-grid van owner says long stretches of cooling are achievable without depending on an outsized battery bank.
According to the builder, the real advantage comes from insulation.
The creator behind Outdoors Embrace (@OutdoorsEmbrace) posted a video about a self-built van designed to keep its air conditioning going off-grid, with no shore power or generator involved.
In the video, the van uses a Dometic RTX 2000 air conditioner, 800 watts of solar, 600 amp-hours of lithium iron phosphate batteries, and a carefully sealed thermal shell.
Instead of starting with ever-larger electrical hardware, the build focused on reducing heat gain first.
Much of the living area has about 5 inches of insulation, along with roughly 3 inches in the ceiling and 1.5 inches in the floor.

To show how the system performs, the creator shared 14 days of battery data and said the batteries repeatedly climbed back to 100% while the AC switched on and off automatically.
The build also targets common heat-entry points such as glass, doors, and the cab. The van uses layered tint on the windows, white perforated vinyl on the exterior, reflective insulated curtains inside, and weather stripping around important openings. The front cab is separated into its own zone so heat from the windshield does not move directly into the living space.
Summing up the approach, the creator said, “You reduce the problem before you try to solve that problem.”
In a comment, the creator added that the claim is specifically about “the first VAN of its size to get full solar A/C 24/7/365,” while acknowledging that other RVs have already achieved similar results.
For people who travel or live in vans, that kind of cooling could make everyday routines much easier. A cooler cabin may support better sleep, reduce heat stress, and lessen the need to schedule the day around shade, hookups, or air-conditioned public spaces.
The setup could also affect costs. The creator estimated the AC at about $2,300, the battery system at roughly $2,000, the solar array at around $1,200, and insulation at about $1,500, while also arguing that solid insulation could let many people use less battery capacity and less solar.
The same logic applies to buildings beyond van life. Homes, apartments, and commercial spaces can become easier and cheaper to cool when heat is stopped before it gets indoors, reducing electricity demand and improving comfort during hot weather.
Comfort is not determined by thermostat settings alone. Air movement, cooler interior surfaces, and fewer concentrated hot spots can make a space feel better without requiring the AC to run nonstop.
For a van build, one lesson is to focus on where heat sneaks in: seal thermal gaps, improve insulation, and pay close attention to windows, doors, and the cab area.
Reflective window coverings, weather stripping, and stronger insulation can all cut the workload on an air conditioner. Roof-mounted solar panels may help twice over by generating power and shading the roof, which can reduce heat before it reaches the interior.
In houses or apartments, similar measures — including curtains or reflective shades, sealed drafts, and improved insulation — can help keep heat outside and lower later energy use.
The creator’s conclusion was direct: “The answer is something almost nobody gets excited about during a van build. It’s insulation with minimal thermal gaps,” the creator said.
One commenter put it this way: “I’m baffled why people are reluctant to believe that insulation makes a massive difference.”
