The site of a historic former windmill could soon be powered by the sun after plans were approved to fit 26 solar panels to the roof of its adjoining hall. 
The Grade II-listed Roughton Mill, a 53-foot landmark now used as a base for the 1st Rural Roughton Mill Scout Group, is set for a green upgrade under plans backed by North Norfolk District Council. 
No panels or equipment will be attached to the listed windmill tower itself. 
Instead, the solar array, inverters, battery storage and associated electrical equipment will be installed on the adjoining hall roof – described in the application as a less sensitive existing built surface. 
The applicants said placing the modules together on one roof plane, rather than spreading them across the building, would create a “more disciplined composition” and reduce the need for cable routes, roof penetrations and extra equipment. 
The 26 panels will have an all-black finish, selected because it is visually quieter than conventional silver-framed modules and would create a consistent dark plane. 
The planning statement said the scheme would reduce the community facility’s reliance on imported electricity and help support its long-term affordability. 
There are no immediate neighbouring properties, with the nearest homes around 60 metres to the north-west.
