Generating more energy from the same amount of sunlight has long been one of the solar industry’s biggest goals. Perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells could make that possible by converting a greater share of sunlight into energy than conventional silicon solar cells. Perovskite is a photoactive crystal structure that absorbs short-wavelength light. Using a solution processit is made into a thin film, which allows for scalable, low-cost solar technology. It uses fewer materials, absorbs light efficiently, and is lightweight and flexible.

Before this next generation of solar technology can be commercialized and deployed at scale, however, it must demonstrate that it can operate safely, reliably, and consistently under real-world conditions.

That is why independent certification marks an important milestone. Qcells recently became the first company to receive independent certification for its tandem solar modules, confirming that they meet internationally recognized standards for safety, reliability, and performance, as the technology moves closer to commercial deployment.

Here’s how perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells work, why this certification matters, and what it means for the future of solar energy.
