After Germany visit, UK electrician says plug-in batteries are safer than critics think – The Cool Down

Many U.K. electricians have been wary of plug-in solar and battery equipment. But one electrician said that after seeing how widely the systems are used in Germany, he came away believing their real-world safety record is much stronger than many critics assume.
To examine the issue firsthand, Cory Mac (@corymac), a U.K. content creator, electrician, and solar installer, traveled to Germany in a YouTube video.
He said the country had already topped 500,000 installed plug-in systems, and that the ones he looked at were limited to 800 watts per meter — a limit he expects for U.K. plug-in systems too.
A big reason these systems are controversial is that they depart from the usual setup people associate with solar. In the video, Mac explained that standard rooftop solar is normally connected to a home’s electrical panel by an electrician, whereas plug-in units can feed electricity through a regular outlet.
Because of that, questions have come up about shared outlets, aging wiring, and whether an unplugged system could still pose a hazard. Mac checked one of the most common safety concerns by testing whether residual current protection would disconnect quickly enough during a fault. He said the shutoff happened in 23.5 milliseconds, far below the 300-millisecond shock-protection threshold he cited.
Mac’s visit included examples of systems running from normal outlets in garages, on balconies, and in homes. One balcony installation cost €380 (~$441 USD), and its owner said it had generated 1 megawatt-hour since May 2023. Mac said that translated to around €300 (~$348 USD) to €400 (~$464 USD) in savings, so the system had effectively paid for itself.
In the comments, Mac added, “Will it ever outperform a full size professionally installed system? Of course not. But this fills a space in the market that was previously inaccessible for renewables.”

Mac also cautioned that not every installation is safe by default and said people should approach these systems with the same care they would give any major electrical equipment.
“Make sure that the circuit’s safe and that it’s been tested by an electrician. And always make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions properly,” he said.
