Five Ways India’s Solar Inverter Market Is Changing Photograph: (AI)
India’s solar inverter market is entering a period of rapid product diversification, with manufacturers increasingly moving beyond conventional string inverters to address demand for energy storage, larger utility-scale projects, module-level optimisation and digitally connected rooftop systems.
The shift is visible across product launches and technology strategies. Hybrid inverters are moving into higher power classes, utility-scale manufacturers are pushing inverter ratings beyond the 300-350 kW range, while microinverters are attracting a wider set of global players. At the same time, cybersecurity and data-localisation requirements are becoming an increasingly important part of inverter procurement.
Here are five trends reshaping the Indian inverter market.
Hybrid inverters are no longer limited to residential backup applications. Manufacturers are increasingly developing higher-capacity systems that combine solar generation, battery storage and grid management for commercial and industrial consumers.
Solis, for instance, launched a 125 kW smart string hybrid inverter for C&I applications in 2025. Its S6-EH3P series combines PV inversion, battery charging and discharging, on-grid/off-grid switching and energy management in a single system. Multiple units can also be operated in parallel up to 1.25 MW. Deye has also moved into the 100-125 kW category with its three-phase high-voltage hybrid inverter, which supports battery integration, AC coupling and parallel operation. Indian player SolarYaan is similarly offering hybrid inverters ranging from 5 kW to 125 kW, including a 50-125 kW commercial series.
The trend reflects a broader change in the C&I market, where customers increasingly want one power-conversion platform capable of handling solar, storage and backup rather than deploying separate systems.
Another visible trend is the push towards higher-capacity string and utility-scale inverters. In the last Inter Solar event in Gandhinagar, we saw Sigenergy launching its 500 kW utility-scale inverter, marking a new milestone. GoodWe, another global firm, has also eyed a 500kW inverter launch. This comes at a time when many of the solar inverter companies flaunted their 350kW inverters, but now the game is getting bigger.
“We are the first one launching a 500-kilowatt utility inverter with 1,000 volts globally, and of course, the first one launching in the Indian market as well,” Sigenergy team told Saur Energy at Inter Solar, this year.  According to the company, the launch is part of a broader strategy to offer an integrated energy ecosystem across residential, commercial and utility-scale segments.
The underlying logic is straightforward: higher-capacity inverters can reduce the number of inverter units required at large solar plants and potentially lower balance-of-system and installation costs. As utility-scale projects become larger, manufacturers are therefore competing to offer higher power density without compromising efficiency, grid compliance and thermal performance.
Microinverters are emerging as another area of competition, particularly as India’s residential rooftop market expands. Enphase has been the established name in the segment, but the competitive field is widening. Hoymiles has expanded its presence in India and recently secured a 360 MW microinverter supply agreement with Kosol Energie, which it described as India’s largest single microinverter deal to date.
Hoymiles has also received Bureau of Energy Efficiency certification for its microinverters in India, with the company reporting overall efficiency above 95.6% and static MPPT efficiency of up to 99.8%. Deye has a dedicated microinverter portfolio, including models with multiple MPPTs and support for high-power PV modules. Sungrow also launched a microinverter to capture the new rising market. 
The technology is particularly relevant for residential rooftops because each module, or a small group of modules, gets its own power conversion. This can improve module-level monitoring and reduce the impact of shading or differences between individual panels.
However, microinverters remain a relatively nascent segment in India, with cost, installer familiarity and certification among the factors influencing adoption.
Solar inverters are increasingly being treated not just as power-electronics equipment but also as connected digital devices. This is becoming particularly important under PM Surya Ghar. In August 2026, MNRE issued guidelines concerning inverter-level generation data and the storage of data from rooftop solar systems. The ministry’s notice requires compliance with the guidelines and is applicable to inverter manufacturers.
The move follows India’s broader focus on inverter-level data, communication and cybersecurity. Recent reporting on the regulatory framework has highlighted requirements concerning the connection of inverter communication devices to national servers managed by the government or designated agencies.
For manufacturers, this means that communication architecture, data storage, cybersecurity protocols and compliance are increasingly becoming part of product development and market access.
The implications go beyond the inverter itself. Connected rooftop systems can transmit generation, operational and diagnostic data, making the inverter a potential gateway between distributed generation assets and digital energy-management platforms.
The fifth change is happening at the opposite end of the capacity spectrum. The rapid expansion of residential rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar is creating sustained demand for smaller string and hybrid inverters. The scheme had received 7.77 million applications and resulted in 4.19 million rooftop installations by August 5, 2026, according to data presented by the government in Parliament. The installations represented 14,894.95 MW of cumulative rooftop capacity under the scheme.
This is creating room for both established inverter manufacturers and new entrants targeting the 1-10 kW residential segment. The product opportunity is also changing. Customers are increasingly looking beyond a basic grid-connected inverter towards systems that can accommodate batteries, backup loads, smart energy management and, potentially, future storage additions.
For inverter manufacturers, PM Surya Ghar therefore represents more than a volume opportunity. It is pushing the residential inverter market towards a broader product ecosystem involving storage, monitoring, data connectivity and energy management.
