Renovatio Solar, the EPC division of Renovatio, specializing in photovoltaic and energy storage projects, has entered into a strategic partnership with CATL, the global leader in battery technology, for the construction of the Borzesti Energy Storage project, a 918-MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and the first project of this scale to be developed in Romania.
The project is being developed through the special purpose vehicle Borzesti Energy Storage (SPV), jointly owned by RNV Infrastructure and Greenvolt Power. Renovatio Solar will deliver the project under a full EPC contract, covering engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, with an estimated execution period of 12 months.
The selection of Renovatio Solar as the full EPC contractor for a BESS project of this scale demonstrates that the Romanian market has developed the engineering, procurement and construction capabilities required to deliver a category of projects that has until now been rarely seen in the country. Above all, the project confirms the growing maturity of the local EPC sector in the field of battery energy storage.
Secondly, the project highlights Romania’s increasing attractiveness for international capital dedicated to BESS investments, alongside Greenvolt Power’s continued expansion in the Romanian energy storage market.
Finally, the strategic partnership with CATL, which holds approximately 38% of the global battery market, provides the project with direct access to a Tier 1 global supply chain, further strengthening Renovatio Solar’s position as an EPC integrator for large-scale projects and enhancing its competitiveness for future photovoltaic and energy storage developments.

The Borzesti Battery Energy Storage System will absorb excess electricity generated during midday hours, when solar production exceeds demand, and redistribute it during the evening peak, when electricity demand is highest and Romania increasingly relies on imports. By responding to grid frequency deviations in real time, the battery system can provide balancing services significantly faster than conventional technologies.
Over the medium term, the project will create the technical conditions necessary to integrate several hundred additional megawatts of renewable energy into the national grid without requiring proportional investments in transmission infrastructure, while also contributing to reducing Romania’s dependence on electricity imports.
The project’s impact on the electricity market is equally tangible. The system will effectively shift stored energy from periods of very low electricity prices—typically around midday—to evening peak hours, when market prices can be several times higher, helping reduce price volatility across the market.
The construction of the Borzesti Energy Storage project is already creating new jobs in the Moldavia region and includes the rehabilitation and expansion of local infrastructure.
