After Moving Out of Andhra, Websol Gets Land In Bengal For Solar Cell Factory Photograph: (AI)
Websol Energy System Limited has secured land from the West Bengal government, which has allotted approximately 54.20 acres to the company at Falta Industrial Park, Kolkata, West Bengal, for its planned greenfield solar manufacturing facility.
In a press release, Websol said that its new facility will have a planned solar cell manufacturing capacity of 4 GW and solar module manufacturing capacity of 4 GW, to be developed in two phases of 2 GW each. The land allotment follows Websol’s evaluation of locations close to its existing manufacturing operations at the Falta Special Economic Zone in West Bengal.
Websol Energy System had earlier announced a ₹3,538 crore, 4 GW integrated solar cell and module manufacturing project at Naidupeta in Andhra Pradesh. The project followed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board in November 2025 and received government approval in January 2026. By August 2026, Websol had decided to shift the project to West Bengal, with land shortlisted close to its existing Falta manufacturing facility.
Websol is one of only 14 solar cell manufacturers in India approved under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), and the only such manufacturer based in eastern India. 
The decision to expand in West Bengal is expected to support faster execution compared with developing a facility in an entirely new location. The proposed facility will also create a larger integrated manufacturing base for Websol in eastern India, at a time when domestic solar manufacturing capacity is expanding to support India’s growing renewable energy requirements.
Commenting on the allotment, Sohan Lal Agarwal, Chairman & Managing Director, Websol Energy System Ltd, said: “When Websol entered solar manufacturing in the mid-1990s, the industry in India was still at a very early stage. Today, solar is becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s energy infrastructure, and the need for strong domestic manufacturing has never been clearer.
For us, this land allotment represents the next phase of a journey that began more than three decades ago in West Bengal. It allows us to build at a significantly larger scale while remaining close to an ecosystem, workforce and operating base we know well. As India expands its solar capacity, we believe manufacturing must grow alongside it, across regions and closer to demand. This project is Websol’s contribution to building that deeper domestic manufacturing base.”
