e-Storage to deliver 100 MW/200 MWh BESS for OX2 in Australia – ESS News

e-Storage, the energy storage-focused subsidiary of PV giant Canadian Solar, has announced it will deliver a 100 MW / 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to developer OX2 for its Muswellbrook solar-plus-storage project in New South Wales (NSW).
Construction has already commenced on the solar and battery project being built by Swedish-headquartered renewables developer OX2 in partnership with the Australian arm of Japanese resources and energy company Idemitsu. The project, being constructed at the site of a former Muswellbrook coal mine in the Hunter Valley, will comprise a 135 MW solar farm and 100 MW / 200 MWh BESS.
e-Storage has signed an agreement to supply and commission the battery system that will utilise its SolBank 3.0 battery containers. SolBank is the lithium-iron phosphate chemistry-based battery designed and manufactured by e-Storage for utility-scale applications.
The Canadian company said it will deliver an integrated solution featuring SolBank 3.0 containers paired with power conversion systems (PCS), plant controls, and the company’s proprietary EQ-S Energy Management System (EMS).
e-Storage said once operational, the system will support the long-term hybrid power purchase agreement (PPA) OX2 has signed with web giant Amazon for the project, converting variable solar output into firm, contracted supply.
The 135 MW solar farm and 100 MW / 200 MWh BESS is one of nine Australian renewables projects Amazon signed PPAs with earlier this year as part of a part of a 430 MW deal. Amazon has contracted 94.5 MW of solar and 70 MW of battery capacity from the Muswellbrook project.
OX2 Australia Vice President Steve Symons said the BESS is a key element of the project, helping to strengthen grid reliability in a region transitioning away from coal.
“This battery storage system is what turns Muswellbrook into a true hybrid facility, pairing solar generation with storage so we can capture energy when the sun is shining and deliver it when the grid needs it most,” he said. “It’s a key step in providing firm, reliable renewable power to the Hunter region.”
e‑Storage said shipments are scheduled to begin in Q3 2027, with commercial operation targeted for Q3 2028.
In addition to supplying the BESS, e‑Storage is also responsible for the grid connection studies, supplying the hybrid power plant controller that coordinates the battery with the co-located solar farm, and leading the overall integration and commissioning of the hybrid project. The company will also be responsible for maintenance of the Muswellbrook BESS under a 20-year long-term service agreement (LTSA).
The Muswellbrook project is being delivered as a joint venture between Bouygues Construction Australia and Equans Solar & Storage with Idemitsu Australia as co-development partner.
