Western Australian regional energy provider Horizon Power has announced that the Leonora Power Project, that is delivering a new solar and battery system to help power the Goldfields town, is taking shape with construction of the hybrid system well advanced.
The state-owned utility said the new system will combine 2.4 MW of solar, a 9.9 MWh energy shifting battery, and 2.7 MW of diesel generation at a dedicated site near the town’s airport, providing the total power supply for the town.
The hybrid system, being delivered by off-grid power specialists Pacific Energy as part of a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), will be capable of delivering about 60% of Leonora’s forecast energy demand from solar, some of it stored in the battery.
Horizon Power Chief Executive Officer Krystal Skinner said construction of the hybrid energy system is well underway with first power from the new system expected in 2027.
“Key infrastructure is now in place, with all 3,780 solar panels successfully installed by Pacific Energy,” she said, adding that “preparations are underway for the next phase of works which will connect the new hybrid power station to Leonora’s current power supply.”
Construction of the hybrid system is expected to be completed by early next year, with the system to provide Leonora’s total town power supply under the PPA. Under the agreement, the scalable system is set to deliver up to 60% renewable energy for the town.
The Leonora project marks another step in Western Australia’s regional energy transition.
Horizon, which is responsible for delivering energy solutions across a service area covering 2.3 million square kilometres, and operates more than 35 microgrids in regional towns and remote communities.
Many of these microgrids are still powered by a combination of gas and diesel fuel, but that is changing as the economics of technologies like solar and batteries are outstripping traditional generation sources.
Among Horizon’s renewables-focused projects is a 409 kW solar farm and 2.8 MWh battery being built in the Goldfields town of Menzies, while a system comprising a 9.6 MW solar farm and 10 MW / 49.6 MWh of battery energy storage that will help power the town of Exmouth in the state’s Gascoyne region is nearing completion.
