Clearway Energy, a US clean power developer, has finalized financing and broken ground on a 650MW solar PV installation in Missouri, with commercial operation targeted for 2028.
The Swan Energy Center is taking shape on sections of land in north-western Bates County that were previously strip-mined, marking Clearway’s inaugural solar venture in the state. A 20-year power purchase agreement underpins the project, which is part of a 1.2GW project portfolio the company unveiled earlier this year.
According to Clearway, the project will rely on solar panels and other components produced in the United States. The developer said the total investment amounts to approximately US$1.5 billion, with a bank consortium led by Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, DNB Bank and National Australia Bank arranging the financing.
Blattner Energy is partnering on construction, which is anticipated to generate as many as 500 jobs during peak building activity.
John Woody, Clearway’s chief development officer, called the Swan Energy Center a major investment in Bates County that would bring dependable clean energy and economic gains to the area, and thanked local partners for their confidence in welcoming the company into the community.
In addition to power production, the company intends to preserve native grasses and floral resources throughout the site to sustain habitats for pollinators such as monarch butterflies, while enhancing soil drainage and soil health.
Together with its public affiliate Clearway Energy, Inc, Clearway Energy possesses over 14GW of gross generating capacity spanning 27 US states. This encompasses roughly 11.4GW of wind, solar and battery energy storage assets, plus more than 2.8GW of flexible dispatchable generation. Clearway Energy represents about 13.9GW of that capacity, consisting of around 11.1GW of renewable and storage assets and 2.8GW of flexible generation.
In August 2026, Clearway Energy disclosed 3,585GWh of solar generation for Q2 2026, an increase from 2,800GWh the prior year, with first-half solar generation totaling 5,882GWh. Its renewables and storage portfolio produced 6,867GWh during the quarter, marking a 16% year-on-year rise.
The company’s expansion pipeline features the 210MW Honeycomb Phase II battery storage portfolio in Utah, slated to start operating in 2027, and the 975MW Chimney Canyon solar-plus-storage project in Arizona, which has a long-term PPA and is expected to come online in 2029.
