Tunisia tenders 50 MW solar project and 600 MWh battery storage systems – African Manager

Tunisia’s state-owned National Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) has launched two tenders covering a 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project paired with battery energy storage and the installation of 600 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across ten sites nationwide.
The first tender concerns the Tataouine solar and battery storage project. It covers the installation of 50 MW of solar PV capacity, a battery storage system rated at 10 MW/20 MWh, as well as the associated high-voltage grid infrastructure and transmission lines, according to the site renewablesnow.com.
The project is supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), with bids due by December 10, 2026.
The second tender, published on September 24, covers the deployment of battery energy storage systems across ten sites divided into three regional lots: 210 MWh in northern Tunisia, 180 MWh in the central region and 210 MWh in the south.
The planned 600 MWh of storage capacity is intended to strengthen Tunisia’s electricity system by improving its ability to store and manage energy. Combined with the solar project, the investments form part of efforts to support renewable energy integration and enhance the flexibility of the national power grid.
