Madbouly Opens 1.2 MW Solar Power Plant at Nasr Petroleum – Egypt Oil & Gas

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated a 1.2-megawatt (MW) solar power plant at Nasr Petroleum Company in Suez, as the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR) expands renewable energy use and improves energy efficiency across the petroleum sector, according to a statement by the Cabinet.
The project comprises 10 solar canopies installed in the company’s parking area, making use of available space to generate clean electricity and meet part of the facility’s power requirements.
According to Salah Mohamed, General Manager of Energy Efficiency at Nasr Petroleum Company, the plant is expected to reduce the company’s electricity consumption from the national grid by 2,628 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually.
Nasr Petroleum Chairman Rashad Nazim said the project supports efforts to improve operational efficiency, reduce reliance on conventional energy sources, and lower operating costs over the long term. It also aligns with the ministry’s strategy to expand solar power projects across petroleum and mining facilities and company administrative buildings.
Nazim added that the petroleum sector is implementing an integrated plan to improve energy efficiency and adopt lower-emission solutions. The plan includes expanding solar power generation, utilizing flare gas to generate electricity instead of burning it, and implementing energy-efficiency initiatives across operational sites.
From July 2024 to September 2026, the sector implemented 36 solar power projects across petroleum companies and facilities, with a combined capacity of 5 MW. These projects are expected to save approximately 680,000 liters of diesel and 14 million cubic feet (mcf) of natural gas annually. The sector is targeting an additional 51 solar projects in the coming period.
During the same period, the petroleum sector implemented 125 energy-conservation and efficiency projects and initiatives, which reduced carbon emissions by approximately 768,000 tons. A further 77 projects and initiatives are being prepared to build on these results, Nazim said.
ANasr Petroleum Company is a state-owned Egyptian oil company operating in the refining sector. Based in Suez, the company processes crude oil into petroleum products, contributing to Egypt’s domestic fuel supply.
