Sydney-based SMA Australia, a subsidiary of German solar and battery inverter manufacturer SMA Solar Technology AG, has unveiled a new grid-forming solution at All Energy in Melbourne, which tackles the challenges of securing grid connections and attracting investment.
The solution enables renewable generation to actively support electricity system stability through services including synthetic inertia, fast frequency response and voltage support.
Its DC-coupled architecture can capture solar energy otherwise lost through inverter clipping and storing it for dispatch during periods of higher electricity demand or more favourable market conditions.
It combines power conversion technology, intelligent plant controls and engineering support, helping reduce system integration complexity and the challenge of coordinating equipment and control systems from multiple suppliers.
It also incorporates advanced silicon carbide semiconductor technology, enabling DC-side conversion efficiencies of up to 99.%.
SMA Australia Managing Director John Alexander, who will address All Energy on Wednesday 28 October in a presentation titled ‘From megawatts to megabankable: How grid stability is reshaping renewable energy finance’, said the next phase of Australia’s energy transition won’t be measured by how many projects are announced but by how many actually connect to the grid, perform reliably and deliver a return.
“Grid stability is no longer just an engineering issue. It goes directly to investment confidence and long-term project value,” Alexander said.
“Developers and investors need confidence that their assets can perform reliably today and adapt to the needs of tomorrow’s electricity system. That means designing for Australia’s unique grid conditions, managing risk from the outset and preparing for evolving grid requirements and future market opportunities.”
Alexander said Australia has some of the most demanding grid connection requirements in the world and developers need more than technology that performs well in isolation.
“They need integrated solutions designed for Australian conditions, backed by local engineering expertise and long-term support,” Alexander said.
Medium voltage power station
Also on display at All Energy, SMA will showcase its 40-foot Medium Voltage Power Station (MVPS) 6400–10000 range.
Its integrated architecture, featuring redundant inverter technology, is designed to improve plant availability and support reliable operation of large-scale renewable energy projects.
Other power infrastructure solutions for artificial intelligence (AI) and hyperscale data centres displayed at the SMA Australia exhibit include GridAssist, GridLink AC and the planned GridLink DC architecture.
Key SMA Australia projects include Origin Energy’s 300 MW / 650 MWh Mortlake Battery in Victoria (116 SMA Sunny Central Storage inverters) and FRV Australia’s 100 MW / 200 MWh Terang Battery in south-west Victoria (38 SMA inverters
