Outer Space debuts solar pavilion with hidden battery storage decking – pv magazine Global

While most solar and storage setups are designed around a home, the founding team behind outdoor living brand Outer is putting the tech to use in a new backyard pavilion in a new company called Outer Spaces.
Designed to fit anything from an outdoor kitchen or lounging space to an office or a gym, the team raised $8 million from venture capital with an aim to deliver what it calls an OS1 in 2027.
The approach by Outer Spaces is to make the solar and storage tech invisible in the OS1 in any configuration, but the specs are impressive. With a technical team that includes former Anker Solix members, the OS1 uses what it calls Horizon BladePack lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery modules, installed horizontally within the structure’s metal deck, with wooden decking over the top.
Each module has a nominal capacity of 7.83 kWh, with the system expandable to eight modules and 62.64 kWh. Each module measures 1,470 × 368.6 × 125 mm and weighs about 72 kg (158.7 lb).
The batteries use passive cooling, with integrated heating for temperatures below 0 C. The stated operating range is −20 C to 55 C, with output derated above 40 C. The modules are rated IP67 and carry a 10-year limited warranty.
The system uses a Fox ESS H1-11.4-US hybrid inverter and a 12 kW OS1 DC hub. Rated AC output is listed at 7.83 kVA with one battery module and 11.4 kVA with multiple modules. Motor-starting capability is listed at up to 80 A and 160 A, respectively.
OS1 supports AC coupling with an existing solar installation. Its energy management modes include self-consumption, time-of-use operation and backup standby. The system is also described as VPP-ready and supports PV black start, while generator support requires the Fox ESS Hub G2.
The pavilion comes in 12 × 12 ft and 12 × 24 ft configurations, with six or 12 solar panels, respectively. The supplied specifications put solar capacity at approximately 2.5 kW or 5 kW. Outer Spaces says the battery capacity can be expanded over time. ESS News had slightly conflicting information over if energy storage starts at 15 kWh, or two modules, or just one module at 7.83 kWh.
The company launched with an $8 million pre-seed round led by Upfront Ventures, with participation from Unlock Venture Partners, Mucker Capital, and Genius Ventures.
The company will be presenting at RE+ in Las Vegas in mid-November. No initial pricing was available.
