A gigantic solar farm generating enough power for up to 40,000 homes looks set to go ahead.
The Government has approved the huge Frodsham solar development, which is set to create up to 150 jobs in the construction phase.
As a major project classed as being of national significance, it required approval by the secretary of state – which has now been granted.
While there is no figure on the exact number of solar panels at this stage, the site itself is set to be massive and is located on Frodsham Marsh, approximately 500m to the north of the town itself.
The plans include the solar array itself with an electrical generating capacity of over 130 megawatts, along with electrical and mechanical support structures.
The farm is planned to be in operation for 40 years, with a solar community benefit fund in the region of £65,000 per year being invested in things like local community initiatives, fuel poverty alleviation, employment and skills programs, and regional projects.
The firm behind the plans is Cubico Sustainable Investments which has been involved with sites across 12 countries in Europe, the Americas and Australia. The site sits in the Cheshire’s energy innovation district, a ‘corridor’ of industries such as wind farms providing low carbon energy.
Project chiefs said it will connect into the nearby Frodsham Substation, adjacent to the site over the River Weaver.
Electricity produced will be supplied to the distribution network operator – SP Energy Networks – which is responsible for distributing electricity across Cheshire and Merseyside. The firm said it is also exploring options to provide power directly to local industry, through new individual connections with nearby businesses.
Following the issuing of a Decision Consent Order (DCO) there will now be a six-week period in which any legal challenge must be lodged in the High Court.
Cubico state that construction is expected to commence in 2028, with facility intended to be fully operation by mid-2030.
