Production at a Silfab Solar manufacturing facility has been fully stopped following two separate chemical leaks, according to a report from Solar Power World. The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services requested the shutdown, though it stated there was no impact on people, nearby communities, or the environment.
The first incident involved a leak of potassium hydroxide on March 3. The company’s director of operations described it as an accidental release of 300 gallons of water containing a very diluted amount of the chemical. The material was captured in an on-site stormwater pond, and the liquid is being sent to a recycling facility. Soil at the pond will be removed as a precaution, though no contamination beyond the property was detected.
A second incident on March 5 involved a minor leak of hydrofluoric acid from a tank delivered the prior week. The leak was described as approximately one drop per hour, which was managed and neutralized, and repairs are underway. The company expressed concern that this leak was discovered by local residents using a drone and trespassing, actions it said contributed to public alarm.
The facility, which had not yet begun full-capacity cell production, has faced scrutiny from local residents since its 2023 announcement over its zoning near a new elementary school. The school closed for two days after learning of the incidents, despite local environmental organizations stating there was no risk. Operations remain paused as an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency begins.
