RWE, PPC complete 930 MW solar cluster in Greece – pv magazine Global

German energy company RWE and Greek electric utility PPC have finalized three large-scale solar clusters in northern Greece with a combined capacity of 930 MW.
The work has been completed following the recent commissioning of the last of nine solar farms. Each of the projects are located within the boundaries of the former Amynteo open-cast lignite mine in western Macedonia, northern Greece.
Each solar farm has been developed, constructed and commissioned by joint venture company Meton Energy, of which RWE holds a 51% share and PPC holds a 49% share.
Sopna Sury, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the sites are capable of generating enough electricity to power 400,000 Greek households.
The two partners are now constructing two new solar projects in the administrative region of central Macedonia in northern Greece. The Kotyli and Neo Syrakio solar farms will have a total capacity of 567 MW. They are scheduled for commissioning in 2027 and are expected to meet the energy needs of more than 240,000 Greek households.
In April, PPC announced it had finished constructing a 2.13 GW solar portfolio in northern Greece with a series of projects located on former lignite mines around the area of Amyntaio and Ptolemaida. The company said at the time it was now working to develop and integrate more large-scale storage systems in the same regions as the solar sites.
Figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) indicate that Greece added over 2.2 GW of solar last year, with the country’s cumulative capacity increasing from 8.82 GW at the end of 2024 to 11.5 GW by the end of 2025.
