The industrial and energy sector of southeastern Gran Canaria is experiencing a new boost with the technical upgrade of the Agüimes III photovoltaic plant. This 3,4-megawatt facility, located at a strategic point in the municipality, has received approval for a substantial modification to its electrical components. The adjustment, necessary to ensure operational compatibility with the new configuration of the Montaña del Canónigo collector substation, marks a step forward in the efficiency of renewable energy generation on the island.
The technical intervention focuses on a comprehensive reconfiguration of the evacuation infrastructure. The most significant change is the increase in the voltage level of the connection line, from 20 to 30 kilovolts. This technical adaptation requires the replacement of transformers and medium-voltage switchgear, thus ensuring a more stable energy transfer to the distribution network. The plant maintains its generation capacity using 11.043 photovoltaic modules, each with a peak power of 360 watts, meticulously arranged in three horizontal rows.
The operational heart of this plant is organized around two separate transformer substations. The first integrates a 2.465 kilovolt-amperes inverter, limited to 2.200, while the second has a 1.200 kilovolt-amperes unit. Both units operate under the new 30-kilovolt architecture. The generated energy will reach the delivery center through high-capacity underground conduits, composed of aluminum conductors designed to withstand the electrical flow under the new voltage requirements.
From the delivery center, a 247-meter-long transmission line carries the electricity to the Montaña del Canónigo substation. This substation, which recently underwent a substantial upgrade, plays a key role in the electrical system of the island’s south. The integration of the Agüimes III plant into this node strengthens the system’s capacity to absorb the projected increase in renewable energy generation in this area of Gran Canaria, a region characterized by its high solar radiation and growing industrial demand.
The project strictly adheres to the regulatory parameters that define non-material modifications. There are no alterations to the generation technology or expansions that would require additional expropriations or standard environmental assessments. The safety of the facility, both its main and auxiliary equipment, is guaranteed by this upgrade, which aligns the plant with current island electrical grid standards.
This modernization is taking place alongside other energy milestones in the municipality of Agüimes, consolidating this region as one of the most dynamic renewable energy hubs in the Canary Islands. The installed capacity of 3,4 megawatts, while modest compared to large wind farms, is vital for the stability of the energy supply in southeastern Gran Canaria. The plant’s technical upgrade not only optimizes its immediate performance but also prepares the infrastructure to integrate future technological improvements, reaffirming the role of the island’s south as a driving force for the ecological transition in the archipelago.
