A security fence runs around the edge of a 30-acre field on the Oxfordshire and Wiltshire border, and the people who built it were thinking about electricity meters, not birds. Inside it, 21,000 solar panels tilt toward a frequently grey English sky. The field was farmland once, grazed and plowed, and not much wildlife survived the transition to intensive agriculture. Then something moved in that nobody put in the planning documents. And the numbers it left behind stunned the researchers who eventually went looking.
Farmland birds across Britain have had a catastrophic half century. The stakes are especially high for species in this group, whose numbers have fallen 62 percent since 1970. Hedgerows were stripped out, wildflower meadows turned to monocultures of wheat and oilseed rape, and the insects that fed the nestlings vanished alongside them.
The Oxfordshire countryside around the village of Watchfield tells that story plainly. Fields here run wide and largely bare, with little cover between harvest and planting. Birds that nest on the ground need dense, uncut vegetation around them in early summer, and intensive farming rarely provides it. Relatively little was known about the impact of solar development on ground nesting farmland birds compared to other land uses. Researchers were about to learn something unexpected.
For some species the arithmetic had become almost unbearable.
Westmill Solar Park sits on a 30-acre site near Watchfield, just off the A420. The solar power plant has over 21,000 panels and has been operational since July 2011. It is community owned, managed by a cooperative of local shareholders, and the land between the panel rows is not manicured. Rough grass grows freely and wildflowers push through.
A flock of roughly 40 Cotswold and Lincoln sheep grazes among the panels, keeps dominant plants in check, and uses the arrays as shelter from wind and rain. The result is something rare in this corner of England: a field that has not been chemically treated or mechanically flattened for years. The panels cast shade that holds moisture in the soil, and insects return where insects had been absent for decades.
The perimeter fence was built to keep vandals out. It also keeps foxes and stoats out. Nature read the landscape differently than the engineers did.
Scientists from Lancaster University and local volunteers from the West Oxfordshire Farmland Bird Group began monitoring Westmill in a way that few solar sites had ever been studied. They walked transects, listened at dawn, and counted what they heard and saw across multiple seasons. The panel rows, the rough grass corridors, the insect life accumulating in untreated soil: all of it was logged.
Solar farms with varied habitats including long grass, hedgerows and structural variety supported around three times the bird abundance of surrounding arable farmland. Westmill’s open panel spacing and minimal intervention made it exactly the kind of site where that difference would be sharpest. One particular species kept appearing not just on fence posts and panel frames but, eventually, in the grass itself, very close to the ground.
The monitors kept returning, season after season, certain something significant was unfolding.
Published in British Birds, the study presents the first published evidence of nesting by any ground nesting farmland bird on a solar park in the UK. The species at the center of it is the corn bunting, a red listed bird whose decline tracks almost perfectly with the intensification of British agriculture. Dr. Hollie Blaydes of Lancaster University told the BBC that the findings suggest solar farms could play a genuine role in farmland bird recovery if managed with habitat in mind from the outset.
The corn bunting is a stocky, streaked bird that sings from fence posts and telegraph wires, a sound once so common across English farming country that nobody bothered to notice it. Decades of agricultural change drove it from most of its former range, and it now holds on in scattered strongholds across eastern England and parts of Scotland. Its disappearance went largely unremarked until the numbers made silence impossible.
Researchers found five nests inside the solar farm between 2019 and 2023, plus 36 nests in the surrounding farmland. All five nests within the solar farm were successful, a result linked to invertebrate abundance and predator exclusion by the security fencing. A 100 percent hatching record, across five nests, over four breeding seasons, is the kind of number that stops an ecologist mid-sentence. The fence nobody designed for birds turned out to be the most effective nest protection in the parish.
