Translucent Energy Launches 1.2 GW Solar Module Plant – mvapulse.com

⚡ Quick Read
Translucent Energy has officially announced the launch of a 1.2 GW solar module factory located in Summerville, South Carolina. This strategic expansion represents a significant $15.6 million first-phase investment for the company, aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing capabilities. The facility is expected to create 167 local jobs, signaling a robust commitment to the regional industrial landscape while addressing the growing demand for high-efficiency solar hardware in the North American market.
The Summerville facility is currently undergoing rigorous factory acceptance testing under the supervision of Chief Technology Officer Dr. Nabih Cherradi. With equipment scheduled to arrive in October, the manufacturer is on track to commence commercial shipments by December. The company has set an ambitious production target of 600 MW to 800 MW for its first full year of operation.
The factory’s initial product portfolio focuses on high-performance N-type cell technology across three distinct form factors:
The manufacturing line is designed for versatility, maintaining technical compatibility with M10 (182 mm), G12R, and G12 wafer formats. It is equipped to process N-type, heterojunction (HJT), and PERC cell designs, ensuring the plant can adapt to future technological shifts.
For project developers and EPC contractors, the emergence of this facility provides a critical supply chain alternative. By utilizing a supply chain composed primarily of U.S. components with secondary sourcing from Türkiye, Translucent Energy aims to help project owners meet Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) domestic content bonus thresholds. This dual-sourcing strategy serves as a hedge against trade restrictions often associated with Southeast Asian procurement channels, particularly concerning Section 232 tariffs.
Managing Director Augustus Rylands has indicated that the 281,000-square-foot Summerville plant is merely the first step in a multi-year domestic manufacturing roadmap. Future phases are expected to expand into U.S.-based cell and wafer production. As the global and India renewable energy sector continues to prioritize supply chain resilience and high-efficiency module availability, such localized manufacturing initiatives provide a blueprint for mitigating geopolitical and trade-related volatility in large-scale solar project deployment.
