Today, the Government has introduced a new scheme making plug-in solar panels available to homes across the nation. London Fire Brigade is urging Londoners, who are thinking about installing them, to look through these safety tips and keep their homes safe.  
Unlike traditional solar panels (which are typically wired into the roof of a home), these panels can be placed on a terrace, shed or balcony and are plugged into a wall socket. 
It is important that anyone considering purchasing plug-in solar equipment buys it from a trusted manufacturer or retailer. Buying from a reputable seller reduces the risk of purchasing poor-quality or counterfeit products, which could overheat or fail.  
When installing the plug-in panels, ensure you follow the manufacturers guidance, if electrical work is required always use a qualified installer. Before fitting the panels, check they won’t block any fire escape routes, such as walkways, windows or balconies.  
Assistant Commissioner Pam Oparaocha said: “As with any new to the market electrical appliances, there may be associated fire risks, and as Londoners start installing the new plug-in solar panels, we urge them to look at our safety tips to keep themselves and others safe.  
“Ensure your appliance meets the UK safety standards and is installed correctly – being careful not to block any fire escape routes. During an emergency, firefighters need unrestricted access to your property, so make sure you aren’t blocking emergency exits, doors, balconies or windows.  
“If you notice your device overheating or any other signs of a fault, stop using it immediately and report the issue. Should your appliance catch fire call 999 and inform the operator that solar panels are installed at the property. Doing so will help our crews respond as quickly and safely as possible.”
