A slow worm in rough grass beneath
The survey method is a square of roofing felt.
You lay them out across a site, leave them for weeks, then lift each one and write down what is underneath, which is how almost all reptile counting in Britain is done.
Under one of them was a slow worm.
Not a rarity in itself, but the fourth species logged on that site, and the list did not stop there, which is where an ordinary power station became a record.
Outside the fence, arable.
Ploughed, drilled and sprayed on the usual cycle, which is the condition most of the surrounding county is in and the reason the fence line matters at all.
Three things, and farmland supplies none of them.
Bare warm ground to raise body temperature in the morning, rough cover within a body length of that spot, and soil that is not turned over between one year and the next.
Cultivation removes all three at once.
Open ground with rough grass, scrubby margins and bare patches of warm soil has been ploughed, built on or tidied away across most of lowland Britain, which is why five of the six native species are in decline.
A solar site accidentally rebuilds them.
The land is fenced, taken out of cultivation on the day it is energised, and then left, so rough grass accumulates while the panel edges and the post bases supply exactly the warm bare patches that were missing.
The designation is not a rarity award.
A site enters the national register if it holds three or more reptile species, or two snake species, or an exceptional population of a single one, and any of those alone is enough.
This Dorset site held five.
Adder, grass snake, common lizard, slow worm and sand lizard, which is every native British reptile except the smooth snake, on ground nobody set out to manage for them.
That is the part worth sitting with.
Clearing a conservation threshold by nearly double is not what anyone was aiming at when the racking went in.
The Dorset farm is one entry in a national monitoring set.
The latest edition covers about 6 percent of British solar farms and was launched in Parliament in June alongside policy guidelines from a bird charity and two universities.
The counts are substantial.
259 plant species including endangered wild chamomile, more than 2,800 birds across 77 species with nearly half of them of conservation concern, and 27 butterfly species.
One number reads differently.
The 2,500 bumblebees recorded came from just five species, which is a large count of a narrow group rather than evidence of a rich bee assemblage.
Farmland birds in the UK are down 62 percent since 1970.
Corn buntings are among the worst hit, and at a community owned site in Oxfordshire researchers followed five nests inside the fence where every one fledged, against roughly four in ten failing outside it.
The mechanism is simple enough.
A ground nest fails when something disturbs it during incubation, and a fenced field with no machinery crossing it removes most of what does the disturbing, from the combine down to the dog off its lead.
The sample is the caveat.
Monitoring is submitted voluntarily, so the dataset leans heavily toward operators who already care about biodiversity, which is not the same as a random selection of solar farms.
That limit is stated openly at the launch and in the report itself, which is more than most coverage of it manages.
It does not cancel the result.
It means the figures describe what a well run site can hold rather than what the average one does hold, and those are two different questions.
Not every group does better inside the fence.
A study of 19 English solar farms found bat activity falling by over half compared with matched control sites, with the sharpest drop in the middle of the arrays rather than at the boundaries.
Placement decides more than management.
A site dropped onto species rich grassland or ancient heath destroys habitat that took centuries to assemble, and no seed mix put down afterward gets it back.
The honest reading is conditional.
Solar farms three times richer in bird species than the crop fields beside them are real, and so are the ones that are green deserts under glass.
Which makes the Dorset result a demonstration rather than a rule.
Five reptile species turned up on a solar farm because the ground under the panels was left alone for years, and leaving ground alone is a management choice that any operator can decline to make.
